Since we will be focusing more on this philosopher this month, it is inevitable to talk about Alan Watts' view of the meaning of life. In this post we will deal with a quote from Watts that hits the nail on the head:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have already had your experiences with Alan Watts, you have probably heard a variation of this quote in one way or another in one speech or another. Personally, it took me a long time to really understand this statement. I guess it's because people often have a hard time taking in new perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Watts often compares life as such to a dance, where it is not important where you end up in the room, but to enjoy the dance. He also often compares it to a piece of music, where it is also not important where or how it ends, but that one enjoys the music while it is being played. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another apt comparison would be a road trip, where it's not about where you're going, but much more about enjoying the view and the unfamiliar roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We in the West often have the feeling that everything must have a purpose or a meaning. This butterfly is colorful so that it attracts partners, this butterfly is well camouflaged so that it is not eaten by enemies, this breed of dog is small so that it can hunt rats, this shrub produces berries so that the birds spread the seeds far and wide, this tree drops its nuts so that the seeds fall directly into the nutritious soil below it. Everything needs a reason, nothing can happen of free will or out of itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So the next time you're walking to a friend's house or to work, try to enjoy the journey and not focus too much on the destination or arrival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
