How inconvenience makes your life better
Before I got involved with the subject of philosophy, I was firmly convinced that a good life consists of having no unpleasantness in it. So if we just remove all the unpleasantness from our lives, it will be many times better and more worth living.
Now, a few years later, I have a completely different idea of what constitutes a good life. First and foremost, I am convinced that a good life is one that is not just thought about, but actually lived. However, as far as my view on removing the unpleasantness is concerned, I now believe that this is exactly what makes our lives worse.
Of course, it's nice if you don't have any big appointments, errands, conversations or other major responsibilities on the day, but these are also the things that make the day good in retrospect. You have achieved something on that day that you can be proud of. So a good life is not one in which there are no inconveniences, but one in which you have learned to get along with all the inconveniences and live with them. After all, you can only remove the things from your life that you know about, i.e. you can only remove the known unpleasant things from your life, but sooner or later new things will always creep into your life. So if you have trained the ability to cope with unpleasantness of any kind, nothing new that comes into your life can throw you off course.
